DIY versus professional installation
The DIY line exists because the refrigerant work is done at the factory. That is a real change to the job, and it is also a narrow one — here is what it does and does not cover.

01Install
What the DIY design actually changes
On a conventional mini split, an installer flares the copper, pulls a vacuum on the line set with a pump and gauge manifold, and releases the factory charge. That work needs tools most homeowners do not own and, where refrigerant is handled, EPA Section 608 certification.
The DIY Quick Connect line set arrives charged and sealed. A standard installation connects it without opening the refrigerant circuit, which is what removes the vacuum pump, the manifold gauges, and the certification requirement from the job.

Which parts you can do, and which need a trade
Most of the job is carpentry and careful measurement: choosing locations, mounting the indoor bracket level and on structure, drilling the wall penetration on a slight downward slope for condensate, setting the outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket, routing and connecting the line set, and running the condensate drain.
The electrical is the part that is not optional. These systems need a dedicated circuit sized to the unit and a disconnect at the outdoor unit, and in most jurisdictions that work requires a licensed electrician and a permit. Confirm both before you buy, because the answer can change which capacity is practical for the property.

- Your building department: whether a permit is required, and who may pull it
- A qualified HVAC professional: Manual J, and anything that opens the refrigerant circuit
03Install
Things worth settling before you order
The outdoor units are heavy and awkward, and both units have to be positioned accurately rather than merely lifted — plan on a second person. Work out where the line set will actually run before you buy, because the route decides the length you need and the length is not something to adjust later.
Read the warranty document for the exact product before purchase, not after. The DIY line is designed for homeowner installation, but the warranty document is what sets the conditions — including anything it requires of the electrical work — and those are conditions you can still satisfy at the time of purchase.
04Install
If you'd rather not do it yourself
Plenty of buyers do the mounting and the routing themselves and hire out the electrical. Plenty of others would rather hand the whole job to somebody else, and that is a perfectly ordinary way to buy one of these systems.
